A common misconception in the scooter world is that you can’t get a decent top speed from a lightweight, portable scooter. Well, if you believe that, you haven’t met the Apollo Light. The smallest and most portable scooter from the Apollo range, the Light doesn’t disappoint.
The Light is a fairly punchy scooter and has a maximum speed of 22 mph which is ideal for traversing city roads and urban pathways. It features a 350W motor but has a peak output of 500W which is why it can so easily scale slopes of up to 10%. It also means the acceleration and torque on the Light are both quite impressive. You can expect this scooter to hit 15 mph in just 6.2 seconds.
This isn’t bad for a scooter that only weighs 37 lbs. Although not the lightest scooter on this list, it can be easily carried with one hand and you won’t struggle if you need to lug it up several flights of stairs. It even comes with an added carry handle, so lifting it is that bit easier. Not only this but it has a triple folding mechanism that makes it very convenient to store. Fold in the handlebars, shrink the telescopic stem and collapse the stem of the scooter over the deck and you’ve got yourself one very compact package.
With the speed on offer, the Apollo Light has the potential to be a great commuter scooter, but can it go the distance? Its range sits at a maximum of 22 miles, which is perfect for medium journeys. The battery is composed of Apollo’s preferred Dynavolt cells, which have been shown to perform to roughly the same standard as an LG battery. If you’ve never heard of Dynavolt it’s probably because you’re more likely to find them on a motorcycle than you are on an electric scooter.
The range you get from the Light is dependent on how aggressively you ride. If you constantly max out on speed or have a lot of hills to climb, your mileage could shrink to as little as 16 miles. However, the Light only takes 2 hours to recharge if you purchase the fast charger. With the standard charger, it’s a little longer and takes around 4.5 hours.
It’s always great to see more affordable scooters investing in powerful brakes, and the Light is a perfect example of this. It comes with a dual braking system, featuring a rear drum brake alongside an electric regenerative brake. Although not as efficient as hydraulics, drum brakes need an astounding 3x less maintenance than other brake options and are great at keeping out dirt and water. Both brakes together give the Light a stopping distance of around 4.2 meters, which is more than enough to give you control when you come to a halt.
Despite its lightweight frame, the Light doesn’t compromise on ride comfort. It has an air-filled front tire and solid rubber rear, both measuring 8.5”. The front tire helps to cushion against hard impacts, whilst the rear is completely flat-proof. Solid tires do have a reputation for causing a harsh ride quality, but the Light comes with a fantastic suspension system to remedy this. Dual rear shock absorbers help to support that more rigid tire, whilst a single front spring shock adds to the cushioning of its air-filled partner. As a result, you can expect the Light to confidently tackle potholes and bumpy roads with ease. It’s very comfortable compared to other scooters with a similar price tag.
So how much does the Apollo Light cost? This scooter will set you back $749, which is great value for the features on offer. Not only does it have zippy acceleration and decent top speed, but it also comes with dual brakes and a thorough suspension system. That’s a bit of a bargain if you ask me.
For the price, you can also guarantee that you’re getting a well-built, reliable scooter. Made from forged aluminum, the Light’s spacious black and blue deck can support riders of up to 220 lbs. It’s sturdy and well-made to deal with the challenges of regular use and even comes with a detachable seat that can be purchased at an additional price. It also has a water-resistant rating of IP54 so a little drizzle won’t ruin your day. If that wasn’t enough to convince you of its quality, it comes with a pretty extensive warranty and great customer support should you ever need it.
As with most electric scooters, the Light comes with an LCD display. From here, you can check your riding stats as well as turning on cruise control and altering various scooter settings to suit your riding style. These include choosing whether you want it to be a kick-and-go kind of ride or have instant acceleration instead. You can also flick between the three different gears, each of which has its own speed limit to help conserve battery.
For night time riding, the Light comes with front and rear LED lights so you can rest assured that you’ll be clearly visible to other road users when the sun goes down. If you like the speed that the Apollo Light has to offer, but you need something with a bit more to give in the mileage department, sit back and take a look at the Evolv City Plus. This is a great entry-level commuter scooter and is ideal for urban city riders.
The City Plus boasts the same top speed as the Apollo Light, allowing you to reach 22 mph when riding in third gear, which is the highest setting. This is the perfect speed for zipping along the bike lane and weaving amongst other road users.
Even though it matches the Apollo when it comes to speed, the City Plus actually trumps it in terms of motor size. It features a 500W motor which has a peak output of 1100W. You’ll appreciate this boost if you live in an area with lots of hills as the extra power will help you to tackle more challenging slopes. It also increases torque and ups acceleration rate, meaning you’ll be able to get away a little quicker when you need to.
What sets the City Plus apart from other similar models is its extended range. The Plus offers a mileage of 28 miles on a single charge which makes it ideal for long weekend exploration as well as medium-length commutes. it gives you the confidence to ride for longer, knowing you’ll have enough juice to get you home. This is largely thanks to the LG battery, which also gives the City Plus a premium edge because of LG’s stellar reputation. However, it is a larger battery size so has a slightly longer recharge time of 6 hours.
If you’re not so fussed about the extra mileage, I’d recommend checking out the Evolv City. This scooter has the same top-quality build as the Plus but features a smaller battery and motor, meaning you’ll get reduced range and power (22 vs 28 miles). This comes at a cheaper price of $699, so you’ll save around $200.
As a result of the increased battery and motor, the City Plus is on the heavier side, weighing 44 lbs. It’s just about light enough to be lifted, but you might get a bit of a sweat on if you need to carry it around for long stretches. Luckily, it’s quite compact thanks to the sturdy one-step folding mechanism, telescopic stem, and folding handlebars. Storing it at your destination shouldn’t be a problem.
When it comes to riding quality, the City Plus is perfectly outfitted for urban exploration. It comes with a cushioning front pneumatic tire whilst the solid rear tire protects the motor in the back. The whole scooter is supported by dual spring suspension that helps you to deal with any potholes that might come your way, whilst also giving the foot deck good clearance.
Because of the solid rear tire, you might find that riding on really rough roads can be a bit uncomfortable, which is a common complaint with all solid tire scooters. However, you’ll never have to worry about getting a flat, which makes this scooter very low maintenance.
If this sounds good to you, you’ll be pleased to see that the City Plus comes with a rear drum brake. Drum brakes are highly resistant to dirt and water damage and are very easy to maintain. These do a great job of providing some illumination, but you might want to attach an extra light to the handlebar to make you more visible. For that price, it’s pretty impressive to see a scooter that can reach a top speed of 20 mph. The acceleration on the X7 Pro isn’t sluggish either thanks to the 350W motor which drives it up to its maximum speed in seconds. Users also have the option to moderate how fast they go by flicking between the 3 riding modes available: beginner, eco, and sports. The lower setting is ideal for conserving battery whilst the increased power output helps to tackle inclines of 15%.
Speaking of battery, the 30 mile range on the X7 Pro is one of its standout features. This beats more expensive models and makes it a great option if you like being out on the road for longer. It also has a useful power saver mode that shuts the scooter down after 10 minutes or more of inactivity. This is a great extra touch to help you conserve charge.
But that’s not all. What makes this battery so good is that, unlike others, it’s fitted externally to the stem of the scooter. Not only does this remove extra weight from the foot deck, but it also gives you the option of extending your range even further by purchasing a second battery pack to swap out with the first one when it runs dry. Handy, right? It’ll take between 4 to 6 hours to fully top up the battery but you can choose to charge your scooter as a unit or remove the battery to charge separately. This allows a degree of flexibility whilst also acting as a security measure – who wants to steal a scooter with no battery attached?
If you don’t need such a long mileage, I’d recommend taking a look at the Turboant X7. This scooter has very similar specs to its older brother. Including the same top speed, but offers half the mileage. It also only costs $499.98, saving you $50.
When it comes to rider comfort, the X7 Pro won’t disappoint. It features 10” air-filled tires that provide good shock absorption against bumps or potholes. Their large size also gives the scooter good clearance. Both of these things are important because this scooter comes without suspension so I’d encourage you to stick to more well-maintained surfaces when you can. The tires do a good job, but you’ll still feel more of the road than you might like to.
On budget scooters, the braking mechanisms tend to suffer, but the X7 Pro bucks this trend. It comes with three different braking systems including an electronic, rear disc, and manual foot brake. This is a top-quality combination and delivers strong and smooth stopping power when you need to come to a standstill from the fastest speed settings. In fact, it boasts a braking distance as short as 5 meters.
Just because it costs under $500 doesn’t mean this scooter has a shoddy build. You’ll find quite the opposite. The X7 Pro has a very solid construction and can support riders of up to 275 lbs. Because of the external battery, the stem is thick and sturdy, making it feel more stable and well-balanced. It also comes with a water-resistant rating of IPX4, so it can handle a little drizzle or some splashes now and again.
You might expect a scooter with a solid build to be a bit bulky, but the X7 Pro only weighs 33 lbs, which means you’ll be able to lift it without a problem. The battery protrusion on the stem makes gripping it a bit difficult for people with smaller hands, but it's not unmanageable.
Like most electric scooters, the X7 Pro comes with a front headlight and rear red tail light. Although these are good for making you somewhat visible in the dark, I’d recommend purchasing additional lights if nighttime riding is going to be a regular occurrence. You can operate your lights from the control button on the throttle. The smart LED screen, centrally located on the handlebars, shows whether the headlight is on or off, as well as displaying your current speed, remaining battery power, and riding mode.
The Turboant X7 Pro is the best 20 mph budget scooter. It’s amazing value for money when you consider the premium features it offers like its long-range, pneumatic tires, triple braking system, and even cruise control. It’s perfect if you want high quality, but you only have a limited budget.
Certain scooter brands have a reputation for producing quality products. Similar to big companies like Apple, users know they’re going to get a certain standard and they’re willing to pay a little extra for it. This is certainly the case with INOKIM so it’s not surprising that the Light 2 is such a popular option for many.
When it comes to speed, the 350W motor gives it the ability to tackle small slopes and hit a top speed of 21 mph. It’s no racing scooter but the acceleration is responsive and smooth, if somewhat leisurely. 21 mph is also a great pace for cruising along bike lanes and is the ideal speed if you’re looking for a scooter to explore the city with.
If you like to channel a more relaxed, laid back vibe, the Light 2 could be a good match, especially given the comfortable ride quality on offer (depending on the surface you're traversing). This is thanks to the 8.5” pneumatic tires that help to cushion against bumps and grip the road for superior control. These guys do an awesome job of delivering a plush ride over smooth surfaces, but the Light 2 might struggle more on uneven surfaces, given that it doesn’t come with any suspension. I’d recommend this scooter for riders who are more likely to stick to well-maintained paths.
When riding on busy city roads at 21 mph, reliable brakes are a must. It’s great to see that the Light 2 comes with dual drum brakes, one positioned on each wheel. This will increase your overall braking power and bring you to a stop faster because pressure is being applied to both wheels rather than just one, as seen on other 20 mph models like the EVOLV City Plus. Drum brakes aren’t always as efficient as disc or hydraulic brakes, but they are very low maintenance because they have good resistance against dirt and water.
I’d recommend the Light 2 for anyone with a short to medium commute. This is due to its maximum range of 20 miles which will give you enough juice to get to your destination and back. If your route is challenging or requires you to go at full speed the whole way, just be aware you’ll see less than the advertised mileage (approx. 14-15 miles). It’ll take you between 4 and 5 hours to hit a full recharge when you do run flat.
As well as having a respectable set of stats, the Light 2 is constructed from high-quality components, starting with its LG battery. This is one of the best batteries, so you can rely on its longevity to perform. In addition, the frame has been custom-built so that each element fits together seamlessly, minimizing the chances of developing any structural weaknesses. This may sound like something you’d expect but a lot of scooters take components from different suppliers and then fit them together when they manufacture the scooter, sometimes leading to poor build quality. The spacious food deck also has a low center of gravity to provide excellent stability for riders up to 220 lbs.
This kind of quality understandably means an increase in price, which is why it costs $1,199. Although, you may be able to pick it up for just shy of a thousand bucks ($999) when on sale. This is more than the majority of scooters on this list. It’s important to know that although you are paying for a certain standard of design, INOKIM’s reputation will cost you a bit extra. Put simply, you are paying more for the luxury of the brand name.
Playing into the luxury of the INOKIM brand, the Light 2 is the most compact scooter. This is thanks to it only weighing 30 lbs and having a collapsible stem and folding handlebars. When it’s fully folded, you’ll have a very manageable package, easy for carrying and storing.
The Light 2 is also well-equipped for riding at night, featuring front and rear LED lights that automatically power on when it gets dark. This is a nice touch as most scooters require you to manually turn the lights on.
It’s easy to match the Light 2 to your style because it comes in 5 vivid and stylish colors. The sleek and polished aesthetic will appeal to young professionals and will suit both the morning commuter and weekend explorer. Check your riding stats from the LCD display and easily switch between different riding modes depending on your journey type. Whether it’s running errands or battling through rush hour, the Light 2 can handle it all.
This is a great scooter option for anyone who wants a reliable model for traveling through urban environments. It might not have the fastest acceleration but its top speed is quite zippy and is well-matched to city riding. Its high-quality build sets it apart, so if you want a scooter that feels like a well-oiled machine and you’re happy to pay the extra, the Light 2 won’t disappoint.
As one of the most respected scooter brands in the world, INOKIM has more than one string to its bow. The INOKIM Quick 3 delivers the same top quality you’d expect from this scooter supergiant, however when viewed against the Light 2, it’s clear that its strengths lie in different areas.
For example, the Quick 3 has a lower top speed than the Light 2, claiming a maximum pace of 19 mph. There isn’t much between the two, but if you’re looking to tip over that 20 mph boundary, the Light 2 is a better option. However, thanks to the fact that the Quick 3 has a larger motor, it does exactly what its name says. Its acceleration is much faster and a bit more responsive than that of the Light 2. You’ll be able to get away quicker and its 400W output will help you to tackle more challenging inclines.
It’s apparent that the Quick 3 has been built for those who need more mileage, given that it comes with an impressive range of 28 miles. It’s worth noting that you’ll probably only see this by riding conservatively, so if going further for longer is a priority for you, you’re likely to find yourself hitting 19 mph rarely so you can save on your battery. Recharging will take around 7 hours, which is on the longer side.
The range is still impressive enough that you shouldn’t have to charge the Quick 3 too often. This is thanks to the large battery pack, manufactured by one of the biggest tech companies, LG. This is the first marker of the Quick 3’s quality, although it’s by no means the last.
The Quick 3 delivers when it comes to rider comfort. It features a wide deck that encourages a natural stance and can support heavier riders of up to 265 lbs. It also comes with 10” pneumatic tires. Their large circumference and textured tread provide good road grip as well as cushioning against any harsh impacts. The Quick 3 doesn’t have suspension though, and there’s only so much pneumatic tires can do. Stick to well-maintained roads if you want to experience the best of what this scooter has to offer, particularly if you’re going to be riding at top speeds.
You also need to be sure that your brakes can perform when you need them to. Unsurprisingly, INOKIM has got you covered. The Quick 3 has dual braking power, with a V-brake positioned at the front and a disc brake in the rear, meaning that both tires have pressure being applied to them when you press the brake lever. This increases the braking power and means you can come to a precise and confident stop.
Thanks to the larger battery and motor, the Quick 3 is slightly heavier than the Light 2, weighing in at 36.4 lbs. It’s still easily manageable though, especially with the convenient carry grip which makes for easy lifting. When folded, it’s very compact because of the telescopic stem and foldable handlebars. This boosts its portability, which is an absolute must for any commuter scooter.
The Quick 3 comes with an LCD display mounted on the handlebar which allows you to monitor your ride as well as manage cruise control and speed mode. This is located above the ergonomic thumb throttle – this is one of the best throttle mechanisms because it doesn’t force your hand into an uncomfortable position when maintaining pressure. You can also operate your front and rear headlights from the control center, both of which are bright enough to make you visible in the dark, although additional lighting is required if you want to light the road before you more than a few meters.
Like most INOKIM scooters the Quick 3 features a sleek and stylish design and is available in five different colors so you can pick the one that’s best for. It looks good, but there’s substance beneath that style, and it has a reputation for being one of the sturdiest and most robust scooters.
The build quality is second to none, which is why it’ll set you back $1,299. This is the most expensive scooter on this list, and although you might think that its specs aren’t as impressive as on cheaper models, what you’re paying for is the security of knowing that this scooter is of the highest quality and made by a well-respected brand. If your budget won’t stretch quite so far, check out the Turboant X7 Pro which has a similar long-range, and a slightly higher top speed.
Award: Longest Range
The Ninebot Max is Segway’s answer – and challenge – to the INOKIM Quick 3, although it has a technological edge and an impressively long-range as well as being significantly cheaper, all of which sets it apart from its competitors. Intrigued? Let me tell you more.
The Max is an impressive commuter scooter. The frame feels sturdy and durable, whilst the wide, anti-slip textured surface can support riders of up to 220 lbs. There’s a lot of substance to this scooter, and it gives a very clear sense that it’s been made for one purpose: no-nonsense commuting.
As a result, it comes with a top speed of 18.6 mph which is reasonable for a machine that’s going to be spending its time on busy roads and pathways. You might want something a bit faster if your usual journey doesn’t involve much competition for road space, but otherwise, the Max offers enough to satisfy. It comes with multiple riding modes too – eco, standard, and sports – so you can moderate your power output. These can be accessed from the LED display, alongside your ride stats, power level, and Bluetooth connectivity settings.
Although it’s not the speediest of scooters, it does have fairly fast acceleration. This is thanks to the 350W motor. Its rear positioning means you’ll feel more like you’re being pushed along, so acceleration and torque will feel more powerful. It also means you’ll have more traction to get up slopes of 20%. The Max is a kick-start scooter though, so you won’t get instant acceleration and you’ll need to give it a few helping kicks when you’re tackling hills towards the upper-end of its capabilities.
Another reason the Max delivers a lower top speed is that Segway has chosen to shift attention towards the range. This is the truly impressive part of this scooter, as the massive battery offers a jaw-dropping 40.4 miles on a single charge. This is ideal if you have a long commute or want to use your scooter as your main mode of transport. Even though you won’t have to plug in often, the Max comes with a built-in charger that’ll take around 6 hours to top up your battery. Given the expansive range on offer, this is a good turnaround time.
Remember I mentioned that the Max came with a technological edge? Well, its tires are the first mark of its innovative design. Measuring 10”, the large pneumatics are perfect for providing damping against bumps, easily able to roll over obstacles such as potholes or cobbles. Even better, they’re self-healing. Yes, you read that right. These tires come pre-loaded with tire slime which means they can handle punctures up to 6 mm. Pneumatics are more at risk of getting a flat than other tire types, so this addition is a great way to get around this.
Unfortunately, the Max doesn't come with any suspension. On another scooter, this would be a red flag, however, thanks to the big tires and sturdy frame, this doesn’t pose much of a problem for the Max. It’ll perform pretty well on most urban terrains, although I’d avoid very rough roads just to be on the safe side.
When it comes to brakes, the Max is well equipped to deliver solid braking power. It features a front mechanical drum brake and rear electric brake which can bring you to a confident stop with a slight squeeze of the lever. Although drum brakes aren’t as efficient as hydraulic or disc brakes, they’re definitely the most low-maintenance and are more resistant to both dirt and water damage. The frame of the scooter has a water-resistant rating of IPX5 too, which means the Max can deal with a variety of riding conditions.
Although it’s been built with commuting in mind, the Max is a little on the heavy side, weighing 42.1 lbs. This is slightly over what I’d consider being easily portable, so might not be the best choice if you just want a casual scooter. However, it has a quick folding mechanism that means it’s easy to store when not in use.
If you like what Segway has to offer as a brand, but you need something more lightweight, I’d recommend checking out the Ninebot ES4. It’s $50 cheaper than the Max, costing $799 but only weighs 30 lbs. It has the same top speed as its older sibling, but a reduced range of 28 miles.
With its matt-black exterior, the Max paints a stylish but functional picture. It features front and rear LED lights which are sufficient for making you visible to other road users, however you might need to purchase extra lighting to achieve adequate night vision for riding. Other safety features include a bell and a thumb throttle. The latter isn’t a safety feature so much, but it is one of the most comfortable throttle styles, so your hand won’t get achy and you won't struggle to maintain a smooth and continuous speed – it’s also super easy to quickly take your thumb off when you need to slow down.
A final feature that sets the Max apart from other scooters is its integrated Bluetooth app. Connect your phone to the scooter to save all of your ride data as well as customize your ride. You can set speed limits, lock and unlock your scooter, and even update its firmware to keep the scooter up-to-date with Segway’s latest technological advancements that enhance performance and add new features.
At $849.99, the Segway Ninebot Max is pretty good value for money if you’re after a reliable scooter with several innovative features that make extended commutes a breeze.
If you’re looking for a scooter that allows you to hit a top speed of around 18 mph, but you don’t need the extended range that most of the other 20 mph electric scooters offer, take a look at the Cityrider. Not only does it tick both these boxes but it’s perfect for those of you on a budget, costing only $399.
As mentioned, this scooter has a top speed of 18 mph. This is ideal for busy bike lanes but is also fast enough to reduce short commute times. The 300W motor means that acceleration is surprisingly responsive for a scooter at this price, and it’s fast enough to get away quickly when you need it to. It’ll also help you out when you need to tackle small slopes too.
It’s worth considering that given the reduced mileage on the Cityrider, you might not always be able to ride at top speed if you want to preserve your battery life. Equipped with a maximum range of 10 miles, the Cityrider isn’t built for long journeys and has a fairly long recharge time of 6 hours.
Unlike other scooters on this list, the Cityrider comes with neither solid nor pneumatic tires. Instead, it features a set of honeycomb tires, which strike a balance between the two. Technically, these are solid rubber, but they contain air pockets throughout, so they aren’t as stiff. This provides natural damping, helping to absorb any shocks. They’re also flat-resistant too, which is a bonus.
However, they aren’t quite as good as pneumatics, and given that the Cityrider doesn’t come with any suspension, I wouldn’t advise taking this scooter on heavily pitted or craterous roads. Smoother inner city environments are where the Cityrider is most comfortable.
Honeycomb tires are very low maintenance, though, and the same can be said for the Cityrider’s rear drum brake. It will provide good stopping power, whilst requiring minimum care thanks to the dirt and water-resistant nature of drum brakes. Combined with the rear step-on brake, you can stop when you need to. It’s also great to see a scooter at this price with dual-braking power – a big point in the Cityrider’s favor.
Weighing 28 lbs, this scooter is one of the lightest on the list but can still take a maximum load of 220 lbs, an ideal combo for portability. When folded, you’ll be able to store it easily or take it onto public transport without getting a sweat on.
Most scooters come with a rubber or plastic foot deck, but not the Cityrider. This scooter channels a retro vibe, featuring a wooden deck that has more in common with a skateboard than an electric scooter. This gives the Cityrider an old-school, rustic aesthetic, but the sleek matt-black paint job keeps it from feeling outdated. This scooter’s look is the perfect combination of new and old.
One example of the Cityrider’s modern edge is the fact that it comes with an app – much like the Segway Ninebot Max. You can use this to alter several settings, such as switching between imperial and metric measurements, as well as altering the different top speeds of each riding mode. You can also set and enable cruise control too, so you can sit back and enjoy the ride whenever you feel like it. The app connects to the handlebar display, where you’re able to see your riding stats with a single glance as well as flicking between the two modes available: comfort and sport.
Next to the display, you’ll find one of my favorite things about this scooter: the turn signals. It’s extremely rare to see these on more expensive scooters, let alone a budget option like the Cityrider. They’re operated by pressing the corresponding buttons on the handlebars. The signals will even turn off automatically after 10 seconds, in case you forget to do it.
Speaking of lights, the Cityrider features front and rear lights as well as lateral reflectors. These do a good job of making you visible, but if you were hoping they’d illuminate the road before you, you might be disappointed. They do a fairly decent job but I’d recommend purchasing a more powerful headlight for nighttime riding.
The Cityrider might not have the longest range, but for the price you pay and the premium features on offer, you’d be hard-pressed to beat it. It’s very good value for money and is ideal if you want a scooter to travel short distances at a decent speed.
